The goal of this exploratory research is to study the feasibility of applying global search techniques to parameter identification in groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling. Specifically, we are interested in exploring the ability of global search techniques to simultaneously identify both the spatial distribution of a parameter (i.e., parameter structure) and the values of the parameter. We are also interested in exploring other conceptual and computational issues relevant to parameter identification associated with three-dimensional flow and solute transport modeling in heterogeneous aquifers. Some of these issues include incorporation of prior information, search of global optimum, coupling of flow and transport in inverse analysis, and improvement of computational efficiency of global search procedures.
