Short Course on Groundwater Flow Modelling
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Groundwater flow modelling has become an integral component of many geotechnical and environmental projects, ranging from flow analysis for slope stability and construction site dewatering design to impact assessment for landfill sites. A 3-day groundwater modelling short course designed to meet HKIE CPD requirements will be offered in the Department of Earth Sciences in HKU and is open to geological, geotechnical and environmental engineers.
The course is application oriented and is designed for practitioners. No prior experience of groundwater modelling is required, although a basic knowledge of groundwater flow and hydrogeology will be useful. This hands-on course will emphasize the application of the most widely used groundwater flow model MODFLOW in hydrogeological, geotechnical and environmental problems. At the end of the course, another very popular code MT3D for groundwater contaminant transport modelling will also be introduced. Case studies will be presented to illustrate the use of MODFLOW for dewatering designs, slope groundwater analysis and aquifer remediation assessment. The class lectures and computer sessions are designed to cover the entire simulation process, from the development of conceptual models and preparation of input files, to model calibration and presentation of the results. The participants will be given an opportunity to develop a complete flow model from the basic field data or to work on the models from their own projects.
Each participant will receive complete versions of MODFLOW and MT3D software, including the users guides, all source codes, executable problems, etc. A certificate will be issued to participants upon successful completion of the course.
INSTRUCTORS: Dr. Chunmiao Zheng is a Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Alabama. He received a Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in USA. Dr. Zheng is an internationally recognised expert in groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling. He is author of two widely used codes, PATH3D and MT3D, and a co-author, with Gordon Bennett, of the book "Applied Contaminant Transport Modelling: Theory and Practice". Dr. Jimmy Jiao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. He received a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK. Dr. Jiaos research involves theoretical investigation and field application of hydrogeology and engineering geology. Both Drs. Zheng and Jiao have used MODFLOW for numerous groundwater modelling projects.
